Declared dead live longer: Why SMS has not vanished yet and why it is here to stay

According to Wikipedia, SMS was initiated already at 1985 as the concept was proposed by Germany and France into the GSM group meeting in Oslo. Some other sources name a Finn Matti Makkonen as inventor of SMS.

Whatever the true origin of SMS was, after 30 years, it is still there, live and kicking. These tiny 160 characters (or more if you use concatenated SMS) have survived huge growth and stayed there through development of early basic GSM phones to newest smart phones.

There lies also one of the reasons, why SMS has been so successful: device compatibility. As every mobile phone since late 90?s supports SMS, everybody knows that if you send an SMS, it goes through. Another reason is the full interoperability between operators. As SMS was a revenue hit for operators since early 2000, every operator made sure that they have global SMS coverage and global roaming agreements in place in order SMS to go through also to any other operator.

Simplicity is another factor of the SMS success. You just need to know the mobile phone number of the recipient and that?s it. You don?t have to install any apps or to worry if the recipient has a same app. You write shortly as you have limited characters available and therefore you get straight to the point. Also you know that your message will be read as every mobile phone or smart phone notifies you clearly that you have received an SMS. Therefore SMS is very good tool to inform people or ask something important where you need to know answer soon.

Many people, also many so called industry experts have many years told that SMS will disappear soon. First they told already in early 2000 that MMS is taking over and now they are telling that instant messaging is taking over. MMS was never a true hit, because it lacked interoperability and it was expensive. Just try to send MMS from your far-away travel destination to your relatives at home and you know what I mean. Instant messaging has indeed become a huge hit and most of the person to person SMS messaging has moved to instant messaging platforms as Whatsapp, WeChat, Line, Viber and to hundreds of other platforms which have been developed. But is therefore SMS disappearing? I don?t agree.

In fact, it is very good for SMS to stay relevant, that majority of person to person messaging has moved away to instant messaging. For example youngsters are texting so much and from many devices that it would have become a problem for the whole SMS infrastructure. Also it is much cheaper for them to have a data-package and send all these thousands person to person messages over instant messaging service. However, as the chats with friends have moved away, the SMS has been reserved for other important communication. It is much more convenient that your dentist reminds you with an SMS or your package postal service sends you notifications over SMS. It is 100% sure that you see and read these messages. SMS has therefore merged like a premium communication channel for companies, event organizations and public offices which need to get their message through and read. Just think yourself, when has been the last time that you have not read or noticed an SMS which you have received? That is what I mean.
